Maya Buffomante as a Teaching Artist and Director
Maya's journey into the world of educational theatre began in the summer of 2022 when she joined BAM Theatre Company as an intern. Though she officially entered the field as a theatre professional, her passion for both education and theatre has been a lifelong pursuit. At 15, she took her first job at a childcare center, demonstrating her early interest in working with young people. Some may some she began her teaching and directing work when she was just 8 years old, directing her friends (and forcing them to be) in dramatic neighborhood skits and thrilling iMovie videos. As much as her love for theatre had been installed in her from a young age, so has the love for education. Utilizing theatre as a tool for education is what inspires her.
After her time at BAM Theatre Company, Maya expanded her work as a teaching artist in Madison, Wisconsin. She began as an intern with the Children's Theatre of Madison and quickly moved up to become Head Teaching Artist for their summer camps and after-school classes. Her teaching work didn't stop there. Her main focus is Musical Theatre and Singing classes. At the same time, she also served as the after-school music teacher at Verona Area Community Theatre and eventually went on to direct their summer productions.
Along the way, Maya directed pieces for short play festivals, including both original works and scripted plays. She assisted in directing a student-written, full-length play focused on social and cultural awareness, and continues to direct freelance projects, showcasing her versatility and deep commitment to the craft.
Through her work, she remains dedicated to creating spaces where young people can discover their voices, build confidence, and engage with the world through the power of theatre.
